My Race Across the West Charity_____________________

This year I will be part of Team JDRF, racing solo RAW to raise awareness of The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.  We have a large team racing in RAW/RAAM for this worthy organization:  Pat and Charlie Jenkins of Texas will be racing RAW on Tandem, Tim Skipper of California will be leading a team of four tandems in The Race Across America.  You can visit their website to learn more about all of Team JDRFs riders at www.teamjdrf.org  The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has been researching diabetes for 40 years.  Although many advancements have been made through their extensive research, their goal has not been met... a cure for diabetes.  We can all perhaps think of someone who has the disease or has lost someone from complications of diabetes.  I myself lost my Dad due to complications of this disease.  I think of him often and will be thinking of him as I Race Across The West for this worthy cause.  Please take time to visit the website ofJuvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, learn more about this disease, and how you can help achieve their goal of a cure.

The Big White Van

 In January of 2005 I began preparations to race solo Race Across AMerica.  I had no idea what lay ahead of me, but never-the-less, went full speed ahead.  I did not know how I would be able to achieve this financially, therefore, I asked friends and family if they could pledge any amount to help supplement my own funds.  The outpouring of support was overwhelming!  Most of my supporters told me they felt like part of my team and it was exciting for them to be racing across America with me.  I was truly humbled to have so many people behind me, some that I knew well, and others that I did not know at all except through a mutual friend.  The promoters of  RAAM were intrigued by the "big white van" with over 100 names of sponsors on the side!  Unfortunately,  because of terrible saddle sores and extreme exhaustion, I had to pull out of the race with just 150 miles to go.  My average speed had fallen below the race minimum and I knew that I would not be able to finish in the alotted time.  I felt I had let so many people down.  To my surprise all of those supporters and more convinced me to go for a second try in 2006.  I was really overwhelmed.  I trained to be in the best shape of my life, not only to finish, but with asperations of finishing in the top 5!  That dream came to a crashing halt when I was attacked by a dog with only 13 days to the start of  RAAM.  I suffered a broken hip, collarbone, ribs, and a broken spirit.  It has been a long road back to get into any kind of shape to attempt  RAW and all of the support that I had for the 2005 and 2006 endeavor has not been forgotten.  Every one of those sponsors will be back on the sides of the "big white van" as we all RACE ACROSS the WEST together.  Thank you all.
