Sebring 2011
by Crew Chief Linda
The weather at this year's Sebring 12/24 was a great improvement from last year's winter wonderland. The temperatures were much more mild, although a constant smoke from the area muck fires hung in the air. At times the air was so thick with smoke it brought tears to many of the people watching the race and crewing for riders.
The race started out very quickly and the leaders at the 100 mile mark had reached it in 4 hours. The temperaturesstarted to rise, the smoke was getting thicker, and it all started to take a toll on the racers.
After 12 hours of breathing in all that smoke, Mark decided enough was enough. He was racing in the 24 hour RAAM race and at the time he abandoned, he was first in his age group and even ended up with a 4th place overall. At 12 hours he managed to click off 216 miles.
Peggy Petty also raced the 24 hour RAAM race. She improved on her mileage of 295 from last year and managed a 2nd place with 325 miles. Way to go Peggy!
Steve Petty, who was racing in the 24 hour drafting race, snagged a second place finish with 347 miles. All those miles and he even managed a two hour nap in the afternoon! That's some fast riding!
All in all, Texas riders managed to make their names known once again at Sebring
