Yes, this race did take place in Florida, even though temperatures never reached above 55 degrees! The start at 6:30 am was bitter cold and breezy. Riders began by racing three laps on the Sebring Raceway, then off on a road course headed to Frostproof, FL. When the riders returned to the track, they had logged over 100 miles. They then started to race on a shorter road course of 11 miles, and did laps of this course until dusk and were then led out on to the 3.7 mile race track course. The sun finally showed itself around noon, warming to a balmy 54 degrees. After riders were escorted to the racetrack to finish their 24 hours, the sun set and temperatures took a dive. Some thermometers showed 29 to 33 degrees at times. Cold enough for a heavy frost and droplets on water bottles that began to freeze. Many riders abandoned early because of the frigid temperatures. The Texas crew never gave up! Fighting a bout with asthma, Peggy Petty battled on to log in 295 miles for a 2nd place recumbent female in her age. What a trooper! Riding on one good leg, Sharon Stevens took a 2nd place with 267 miles. Greg Gross faught off the cold and took a 1st with 257 miles in the recumbent category. Steve Petty, fighting sleepiness and cold everything, took 1st in his age in recumbent with 359 miles. Daniel Schaaf came away with a 1st place in his recumbent group with 250 miles. Shellene Foster surprised everyone with a whopping 389 miles and taking first place in her recumbent group, sore knees and all. Mark Metcalfe battled some hot competition in his age group, but managed to come away with a first place logging in 416 miles, which also gave him 6th overall in all categories. 222 racers entered and Texas made a great showing!
